Unlike the developed nations where sport is a business and exists in order to generate a huge sum of revenues, but for Africans, it creates a sense of hope and unity around the content. In this regard, sport has a unique value and takes a special place in the process of development of modern society. As Africa’s oldest nation, Ethiopia too has made a significant contribution to the world of sport. Sport is one of a major influence in Ethiopian life. Both modern and traditional sports and cultural activities are very popular in Ethiopia. In the field of international sport, Ethiopians are outstanding especially in Middle and Long distance running. The out shining Marathon victory of Abebe Bikila put Ethiopia the first country in Africa which scored Gold and open the road for African Athletes. Athletes like Mamo Wolde, Mirutse Yifetre, Haile G. Silassie, Kennisa Bekele, Meseret Defar, Tirunesh Dibaba and others plays a great role to stand their country in the front line of world athletics. As winning is a habit, and sports becomes a culture for the entire nation regardless of any differences. Therefore, sport has a unique value in promoting peace and unity.
On the other hand, from the historical and cultural perspective, Ethiopia is one of the oldest nations with a multi – cultural, multi – ethnic country and has many indigenous languages (84 according to the Ethnologies, 77 according to the 1994 census). According to 2008 estimation the population reached about 82 million and the numbers are excepted to be doubled in the next 20 years. “Bridging the Gap & Bringing People Together.”!!
EASTABLISHED IN 2002
The Ethiopian Sports and Culture Federation in Europe (ESCFE) is a non – profit organization founded in 2002. It is a non – political and impartial organization with intention of bringing all Ethiopians and Ethiopian origin under one common sporting activity and diverse cultural forums at the highest level of excellence without any undue influences. It is also an organisation that would comply with the principles of Equality and Diversity and other basic laws of European Union.
Soul searching and identifying the needs of a community specially the young people is important for a community to know where it stands, where it needs to go and how to do it. Having served the community in a variety of sports and cultural activities in different European cities for the past 14 years , ESCFE is the one and only Ethiopian organisation in Europe who promotes, facilitate and assist in providing access to Sports & Cultural activities for the benefit of well over 200,000 strong Ethiopian and Ethiopian origin many of whom are children and young people under the age of 25 in the interest of social welfare and with the object of improving their condition of life without any prejudice to sex, age, religion, ethnicity or political views.
The engagements will result in:-
- Confident youth who will integrate with the greater society (Thomas Kirszbaum et al) while offering their diversity of thought.
- Youth that fully understand their roots and backgrounds that are less likely to be corrupted by anti-society and anti-establishment groups that twist the minds of the disenfranchised. A prime example is turning the youths away from such influences as the recent focus of extremist groups in targeting the second generation immigrants in Europe.
ESCFE is the one and only Ethiopian organisation in Europe who promotes, facilitate and assist in providing access to Sports & Cultural activities for the benefit of Ethiopian and Ethiopian origin in the interest of social welfare and with the object of improving their condition of life without any prejudice to sex, age, religion, ethnicity or political views.
Since the first festival began in 2003, there have been 14 festivals held in 12 different European cities.
It is also, needless to say, that the festival is not only for Ethiopians but also for people from all walks of life many Africans and the local indigenous people. Hence, the Federation has grown up rapidly in numbers between 5000 – 10.000 people every year and has become an integral, instrumental as well as a popular figure for Ethiopians in Europe.
It is of a paramount importance to say that, the role of ESCFE is not only a way of entertainments to fulfil ones interest but also working towards to reflect both shapes of our culture and values. The role of sport in modern society has changed for a better and it has now become more open to categories people traditionally marginalised in society. As a result, it is very popular in the society and encourages particularly the young people to learn a lot about mental strength, discipline, determination, technique, persistence, passion and help them to build positive character traits. Moreover, it has a significant impact on the socio-economic and political processes of any modern society. Culture on the other hand, shapes the way we interact. One way to understand a culture is to look at their values such as things that are important to us or the society as a whole. “Values are socially shared ideas about what is “right” and “wrong”, “good” and “bad” in society”. In such a way that, sports have a huge impact in the society and have become a culture and both sports and culture are playing a very important role to prepare ourselves and others today for the uncertain tomorrow. Therefore, we strongly believe that, We (the federation) have the expertise, a passion for change, imagination and vision to build the capacities of the community through the pursuit of Sports and Cultural activities.
